Rachele Kanigel<\/strong> (she\/her) (Program Director) is a professor and former chair of the Journalism Department at San Francisco State University. She was a daily newspaper reporter for 15 years as well as a freelance correspondent for TIME Magazine.<\/em> She has written for U.S. News & World Report, Health, Reader\u2019s Digest, San Francisco Magazine<\/em> and other magazines and websites. She is the author of The Student Newspaper Survival Guide<\/em> and The Diversity Style Guide.<\/em> In 2019 she spent 10 weeks as a Fulbright Specialist teaching and training faculty at Royal Thimphu College in the Himalayan nation of Bhutan. She has directed ieiMedia programs in Urbino, Perpignan and Jerusalem.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Paul Crouse <\/b>is a professional photographer based in Kyoto, Japan, where he has lived for more than 30 years. Before moving to Japan, he worked as a staff photojournalist at The Grand Rapids Press<\/i> in Michigan and freelanced for The Associated Press, The Washington Post<\/i>, The Chicago Tribune<\/i>, The Detroit Free Press<\/i>, and other publications. Paul has nearly four decades of professional experience. His work has ranged from daily newspaper journalism to commercial and portrait photography. In addition to his photography work, he is also a private tour guide and online travel consultant specializing in Japan.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Laird Harrison<\/strong> (he\/him) (Reporting\/Writing Professor) has written for magazines (TIME<\/em>, Audubon, Reader\u2019s Digest, People, Health<\/em>), newspapers (San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press<\/em>); and Web sites (Reuters, Salon, MSNBC, CNN.com). He has produced video for Web sites of Smithsonian Magazine and WebMD, and audio for KQED and WUNC public media stations. He has taught journalism at San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley Extension. His award-winning novel, Fallen Lake<\/em>, was published by Verdant Books in 2012. Laird was a student abroad in Bordeaux. After teaching with the ieiMedia program in Perpignan, Laird returned to France to share his enthusiasm with a new generation of students in Arles.<\/p>\r\n

Masa D. Kawamukai<\/strong> (Project Coordinator) is a bilingual executive coach and liberal arts educator. He earned BA and MBA from Holy Names University in Oakland, CA, where he taught accounting as an MBA student. He is a former associate professor at Kyoto University of the Arts and now teaches part-time at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. After working at KPMG, in Oakland, he joined a Silicon Valley startup to help with an IPO, guided the company through the dot-com crash and its shutdown, then helped relaunch it before returning to Japan. Since then, he has combined his business and teaching experience in projects focused on culture and creativity. He has organized an international symposium on sustainable fishing with the World Bank, and has spoken at and helped run several TEDx and TED events. He also gives talks in Japan and abroad on Japanese mythology, spirituality, and anime. He runs workshops centered on design thinking and rapid prototyping, and more recently has been leading dialogue sessions on AI and philosophy.<\/p>\r\n
