She was a daily newspaper reporter for 15 years as well as a freelance correspondent for&nbsp;<em>TIME Magazine.<\/em>&nbsp;She has written for&nbsp;<em>U.S. News &amp; World Report, Health, Reader\u2019s Digest, San Francisco Magazine<\/em>&nbsp;and other magazines and websites. She is the author of&nbsp;<em>The Student Newspaper Survival Guide<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>The Diversity Style Guide.<\/em>&nbsp;In 2019 she spent 10 weeks as a Fulbright Specialist teaching and training faculty at Royal Thimphu College in the Himalayan nation of Bhutan. Before moving to Japan, he worked as a staff photojournalist at&nbsp;<i>The Grand Rapids Press<\/i>&nbsp;in Michigan and freelanced for The Associated Press,&nbsp;<i>The Washington Post<\/i>,<i>&nbsp;The Chicago Tribune<\/i>,&nbsp;<i>The Detroit Free Press<\/i>, and other publications. Paul has nearly four decades of professional experience. His work has ranged from daily newspaper journalism to commercial and portrait photography. He has produced video for Web sites of Smithsonian Magazine and WebMD, and audio for KQED and WUNC public media stations. He has taught journalism at San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley Extension. His award-winning novel, <em>Fallen Lake<\/em>, was published by Verdant Books in 2012. Laird was a student abroad in Bordeaux. Kawamukai<\/strong> (Project Coordinator) is a bilingual executive coach and liberal arts educator. He earned BA and MBA from Holy Names University in Oakland, CA, where he taught accounting as an MBA student. He is a former associate professor at Kyoto University of the Arts and now teaches part-time at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. After working at KPMG, in Oakland, he joined a Silicon Valley startup to help with an IPO, guided the company through the dot-com crash and its shutdown, then helped relaunch it before returning to Japan. Since then, he has combined his business and teaching experience in projects focused on culture and creativity. He has organized an international symposium on sustainable fishing with the World Bank, and has spoken at and helped run several TEDx and TED events. He also gives talks in Japan and abroad on Japanese mythology, spirituality, and anime.
