Aya Fisher (she/her) is starting her senior year at San Francisco State University, with a major in communication studies. She is originally from Sacramento, California. She is passionate about community and telling stories that don’t always get heard. At SFSU, Aya is currently serving as president of Jabulani and vice president of the Black Student Union. Aya is interested in using media to tell stories about culture, identity and social issues. This summer she is excited to be a part of the Kyoto Project and to develop her storytelling and reporting skills while experiencing Kyoto’s culture firsthand. For Aya, being a part of this experience is meaningful because it allows her to represent communities that are often overlooked, not only in media but also in academic spaces. She hopes her journey shows others who share similar backgrounds that they belong in these spaces and can pursue opportunities that may seem out of reach. Outside of academics, Aya loves photography, traveling, watching soccer and finding different cafes around the city. She plans to pursue a career in sports communications or media where she can combine passion for storytelling with love for community building, representation and advocacy.
