Emma Cooney (she/her) is a San Francisco native currently attending San Francisco State University, where she studies professional writing and rhetoric with a minor in creative writing. She has published work for the San Francisco Ruth Asawa School of the Arts blog, including the UMLÄUT journal. At the intersection of storytelling and human exploration, Emma aims to strike a balance between journalistic endeavors and her proclivity for creative writing. Arriving in Japan a month before the program began, Emma traveled around Okinawa and Kyushu, hoping to gain further understanding of the culture she would be writing about. After graduating from college, Emma intends to become an English teacher in Japan. Emma is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and is currently learning Japanese. As a chronic extrovert, she is motivated to learn languages because the more people she can communicate with, the more joy she finds in life. She is using the ieiMedia Kyoto program to help her understand the many facets of Japan and what daily life is like for Japanese residents.
